The easiest way we’ve found to create a solid shopping plan is with a simple grocery list printable. And we just so happen to have one of those for you (in two cute color schemes!) right here in this post!

Why use printable grocery lists?

Printable grocery lists are really helpful for getting organized. Before we even step foot in the store, we can plan out our meals for the next week or two and make sure we have all of the ingredients for those meals written down on our list.

Printable Shopping Lists Save Us Time

When we have all of our ingredients written down (and particularly when they’re categorized like they are with our pretty printable!), we won’t waste time running from one end of the store to the other because we forgot certain ingredients.

We’ll also ensure that we have all of the food that we need, eliminating the need to spend time making extra trips to the market.

Shopping List Templates Save Us Money

When we have our meals planned out in advance, we can buy only what we need to complete those meals. We’ll waste less food, and we won’t be as likely to give into impulse buys because we know exactly what we need.

Going in with a list allows us to make less trips to the store, saving us from spending extra just because we’re there (again).

How do I plan my weekly grocery list?

1. Start by meal planning.

Our blank grocery list template includes space to plan up to two weeks of meals at a time. To make this process go more quickly, keep a list of your household’s favorite meals on hand and simply choose from the list each time you meal plan.

Another way to streamline the meal planning process is to assign a certain type of cuisine for each night of the week. For example…

  • Monday: Pasta Night
  • Tuesday: Taco Tuesday
  • Wednesday: Grill
  • Thursday: Breakfast for Dinner
  • Friday: CrockPot Meal
  • Saturday: Soup and Sandwiches
  • Sunday: Leftovers

Once we have our meal planning finished, we can move on to the next step…

2. List meal ingredients by category on the organized grocery list printable.

When we create our meal plan first, it makes it really easy to add items to our grocery list! Simply go through the meals you’ve planned to make and add any ingredients you don’t have in stock to the list to purchase at the store. If you’re making a meal that you don’t have often, be sure to consult the recipe to ensure that you’ve added all necessary ingredients.

We like to complete this step while in the kitchen so we can check the refrigerator, freezer, and pantry to see what items we already have and what items we need to buy. (Or we also have free printable kitchen inventory pages that you can download to keep track of what you have on hand!)

3. Fill in the free printable shopping list with additional items for breakfast, lunches, snacks, and special events.

Once we’ve listed the ingredients we need for our planned meals on our printable grocery list, then we can go through and add any additional items. (We often have the same things for breakfasts, lunches, and snacks, so we don’t add those to the meal plan. We just put them straight onto the shopping list!)

Be sure to account for anything you’ll need for upcoming special events while you’re adding items to your list. If you are bringing an appetizer to a get together at a friend’s house or need to make a snack for your child’s class, for example, don’t forget to add ingredients for those events to the list as well.

4. Add any needed household items to your shopping list.

Finally, don’t forget to add household items to your list in the “Other” category of your shopping list printable! These can be things like…

  • toilet paper
  • paper towels
  • trash bags
  • toothpaste
  • soap
  • deodorant
  • laundry detergent
  • dish detergent

If you shop at a big box store like Walmart or Target, you may also want to take the time to add needed items from other categories like clothing, home decor, school/office supplies, etc. The fewer trips we have to make to the store, the more time we’ll save!

There’s more where this came from!

Free Printable Grocery List: Frequently Asked Questions

A grocery list should include all of the ingredients you need to make breakfasts, lunches, dinners, and snacks for the next week or two or until you plan on visiting the grocery store again. It can also include household items like toilet paper, paper towels, soap, and toothpaste.

We would argue that making an organized list is even more important if you’re ordering your groceries! When someone else is doing the shopping for you, you don’t have the benefit of walking the aisles, seeing an item, and realizing, “Oh, I forgot to put that ingredient on my list!”

The whole reason we order groceries is to save the time and effort of shopping ourselves, so being organized by creating a detailed list ensures that we’ll get everything we need and won’t have to make an extra trip to the market.

We recommend printing out our blank grocery list and hanging on the fridge or in another easily accessible place in your home. Then as you realize you’ve run out of an ingredient, you can add it to the list for the next time you head to the store.
